Purpose. Identification of the main technological approaches to the production of ultrathin fibrous materials containing biologically active components of plant origin by electrospinning, and assessment of the prospects for their use as functional materials for medical applications.
Methodology. An analysis of recent scientific publications on the production of electrospun UFMs containing plant-derived components was conducted. Methods for the preparation and extraction of plant raw materials, types of polymer matrices, process parameters and electrospinning methods, as well as methods for evaluating the biological properties of the resulting materials, were considered.
Findings. It has been established that water, ethanol, and methanol are most commonly used to obtain plant extracts, and the choice of extractant determines the composition of the extracted biologically active substances; among the polymer matrices analyzed, PVA is the most commonly used; the incorporation of plant components makes it possible to obtain UFMs with antibacterial, antifungal, and antioxidant activity. The possibility of using capillary, needleless, and coaxial electrospinning methods is discussed.
Originality. A comprehensive approach to systematizing technological solutions for the production of electrospun ultrathin fibrous materials containing plant-derived components is proposed.
Practical value. The results presented here can be used in planning experimental studies, particularly when selecting plant raw materials, extraction methods, polymer matrices, and technological approaches for producing electrospun materials for medical use. The identified technological features can be taken into account when developing functional fibrous materials containing medicinal plant components, particularly promising wound dressings.
