Purpose. The aim of this study was to review and compare modern technologies used for the production of micro- and nanostructured systems for pharmaceutical applications, including spray drying, centrifugal spinning, and electrospinning. Particular attention was paid to their ability to modify the physicochemical properties of active pharmaceutical ingredients, improve bioavailability, and support the development of modern drug delivery systems.
Methodology. The study was based on the analysis, systematization, and comparison of published scientific literature. Recent studies related to the production of micro- and nanostructured materials were reviewed, with a focus on technological principles, material characteristics, and the influence of process parameters on the properties of the final products. The technologies were compared in terms of productivity, scalability, morphology control, impact on active ingredient stability, and potential pharmaceutical applications.
Findings. The literature review showed that spray drying is a well-established and widely used technology for the preparation of amorphous solid dispersions that can improve the solubility and bioavailability of poorly soluble active pharmaceutical ingredients. Centrifugal spinning is characterized by high productivity, does not require high voltage, and has strong potential for industrial scale-up. Electrospinning allows the production of ultrafine fibers with a large specific surface area and precise control of material structure, making it suitable for advanced drug delivery systems with controlled and targeted release. It was found that the choice of technology depends on the properties of the active substance, the requirements of the final dosage form, and the manufacturing process.
Originality. The study provides a comprehensive comparison of three modern technologies for the production of micro- and nanostructured pharmaceutical systems. Their technological features, material characteristics, advantages, limitations, and future development prospects are summarized and discussed from the perspective of pharmaceutical development.
Practical value. The presented results can be used to select appropriate technologies for the development of modern pharmaceutical dosage forms based on micro- and nanostructured systems. The conclusions may be useful for pharmaceutical scientists, formulation developers, and industry professionals involved in improving drug performance and implementing innovative technological approaches in pharmaceutical research and manufacturing.
