Abstract

Purpose. To assess the prospects for using magnetic bearings in these systems and to identify their advantages and limitations compared with conventional bearing supports.

Methodology. Scientific and technical information on roller conveyor systems and magnetic bearings was analysed, systematised and generalised. Magnetic bearing supports were classified, and conventional and magnetic bearing assemblies were compared in terms of load capacity, rotational resistance, wear, service life, maintenance requirements and structural complexity. Factors affecting the prospects for using magnetic bearings at light industry enterprises were identified with regard to operating conditions.

Results. Criteria for assessing bearing supports were systematised with regard to the transport of containers, boxes, rolled materials and other discrete loads at light industry enterprises. Passive and hybrid supports were found to have the greatest potential for gravity roller conveyors and sections with stricter cleanliness requirements.

Scientific novelty. A set of criteria is proposed for comparing conventional and magnetic supports in view of the specific conditions of in-plant material handling in light industry. The limits of applying findings from studies of belt conveyor rollers to roller conveyors handling discrete loads are identified.

Practical significance. The findings can be used when selecting bearing supports for roller conveyor systems at light industry enterprises. Conditions have been identified under which magnetic supports warrant testing in gravity roller conveyors handling light discrete loads and in sections with stricter product cleanliness requirements.
