Abstract

Purpose. In recent years, the effect of ultraviolet radiation on biological objects has noticeably increased. Prolonged, uncontrolled exposure of a person to ultraviolet rays can have a number of negative consequences for his health. In turn, textile materials can become an effective protection of human skin from the negative effects of harmful UV radiation.

Methodology. The method of modification with metal nanoparticles was applied, which involves the chemical reduction of metal ions to their metallic form directly in the structure of the textile material and on its surface. The research was carried out using copper sulfate and glucose. The optical absorption spectra of the studied samples of mixed fabrics were measured using an Edinburgh Instruments DS5 spectrophotometer (Great Britain) with determination of the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF). The optical properties of unmodified and modified fabrics were evaluated in the Commission Internationale de l’Eclairege L*a*b* (CIELab) color space using a PCE-CSM 25 colorimeter (PCE Instruments, Germany). The comfort of textile materials was evaluated using the PERMETEST and ALAMBETA devices.

Results. The method of modifying textile materials with metal nanoparticles, which is carried out by impregnating these materials in solutions of metal salts with subsequent reduction of metal ions in their structure and on the surface, has found wide application for working with porous materials of various chemical nature. The conducted studies have proven beyond doubt the effectiveness of using mixed fabrics, such as a combination of cotton and polyester, to create a textile screen that provides protection against ultraviolet radiation. The materials obtained as a result of the modification have UPF 40. This meets the requirements of the AS/NZS 4399:1996 standard and indicates the provision of “excellent protection against ultraviolet radiation”, which is comparable to the best world achievements in the field of textiles designed to protect against ultraviolet rays. Modified fabrics not only demonstrate high shielding ability against UV radiation, but also have high vapor permeability and thermophysical properties, which significantly increases the comfort of their use in products intended for the summer season.

Scientific novelty. The possibility and effectiveness of using the method of modifying textile materials with copper nanoparticles in a copper sulfate solution with subsequent reduction of copper ions with glucose in the structure and on the surface of the mixed textile material has been proven. The method is effective for porous materials of any chemical nature (natural and synthetic fibers).

Practical value. Modified fabrics simultaneously provide the necessary level of protection against the harmful effects of UV radiation and the comfort of products.
